My Most Anticipated March 2016 Releases

[quick thoughts]

The Oscars have passed. We’ve had a Leap Year.
Another month.
Another movie to consume.

March 2016 brings along one of the most hyped about movies in recent memory, Pee Wee’s Big Holiday Special… and Batman v Superman but that’s heading super under the radar. Here are a couple of films I’m most excited for in order of release and keep in mind, I live in Toronto so the release dates for me may differ from you!

Zootopia (March 4th) | 1h 49m

Alright.. What the balls is a Zootopia?  In a city inhabited by anthropomorphic animals, an uptight rabbit police officer is forced to work with a charismatic fox who’s been framed for a serious crime in order to get to the bottom of an important case.

Scale of 1-10, how excited are you for it? I am looking at a solid 7 for this one. A new Walt Disney animated picture? Oh yes please! Jason Bateman is also one of my favourite comedic actors and that sloth scene honestly gave me an ab workout… Hopefully the rest of the movie is just as funny.

The Other Side of the Door (March 11th) | 1h 36m

Is this a prequel to Tommy Wiseau’s The Room? No. A family lives an idyllic existence abroad until a tragic accident takes the life of their young son. The inconsolable mother learns of an ancient ritual that will bring him back to say a final goodbye. She travels to an ancient temple, where a door serves as a mysterious portal between two worlds. But when she disobeys a sacred warning to never open that door, she upsets the balance between life and death.

Scale of 1-10? I have barely heard anything about this movie but it’s a supernatural thriller starring Jeremy Sisto, a favourite of mine mostly due to his incredible performance in my favourite TV series Six Feet Under.. Anticipation is a 6.

Knight of Cups (March 18th) | 2h

"Knight of Cups"

Super riveting, bro, is it a movie about Ultimate Cup Stacking? With Terrence Malick… Maybe! The film follows Rick on an odyssey through the playgrounds of Los Angeles and Las Vegas as he undertakes a search for love and self.

Scale of 1-10? Knight of Cups has some of my favourite actors working today… Christian Bale, Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett, Wes Bentley and it’s a new Malick picture. Giving it a 6.5

The Lobster (March 25th, 2016) | 1h 58m

Okay… what? The Lobster has been around for awhile and according to the Cineplex Website it is coming out on the 25th so.. Fingers crossed! In the near future single people, according to the rules of The City, are arrested and transferred to The Hotel. There they are obliged to find a matching mate in 45 days. If they fail, they are transformed into an animal of their choosing and released into The Woods. A desperate Man escapes from The Hotel to The Woods where The Loners live and falls in love, although it is against their rules.

Scale of 1-10? Guys I have been wanting to watch this movie for over a year. Apparently it’s a super dark comedy and I fucking love me some comedies that really go there… Plus Colin Ferrall and Rachel Weisz? In the words of the immortal Gob Bluth, OH COME ON! 8.5

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (March 25th) | 2h 31m

Well duh. Yeah, who isn’t looking forward to this? Batman and Superman fight. And justice will probably dawn… Which you know for certain will occur thanks to the fucking trailers.

Scale of 1-10? I’m one of those people that aren’t big on the superhero/comic book genre. I’m eh on The Avengers, I like the Captain Americas and Supermans, so when there’s a new movie from Marvel or DC studios you’re darn right I’m watching it 2 weeks after its release on a Wednesday Afternoon! 7.5

Eye in the Sky (March 25th) | 1h 42m

I have never heard of this movie… I’m sure you’re not the only one. I like to think I’m hip with my movie news but the first time I ever saw the trailer for this was when I went to see The Revenant and I was immediately intrigued. A military officer in command of a drone operation to capture terrorists in Kenya sees her mission escalate from “capture” to “kill” just as a nine-year old girl enters the kill zone.

Scale of 1-10? I cannot get enough of movies set in contained spaces/one day or night (12 Angry Men, Who’s Afraid of Virgina Woolf? The Warriors etc.). If done well, the tension can be felt throughout its run time and you breathe a huge sigh of relief when it’s over because you were a literal part of the intensity. Seeing one of the greats Alan Rickman alongside Helen Mirren in a confined quarter makes me excited. 7

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 | 1h 34m

Wait they made a sequel to this? You are DARN TOOTIN’ THEY DID! MBFGW2 reveals a Portokalos family secret that will bring the beloved characters back together for an even bigger and Greeker wedding

Scale of 1-10? Alright guys, I can feel the judging in the air. I can’t lie, I’ve been waiting for the sequel to the original Greek Wedding, that spawned countless parody titles (how many Big Fat Gypsy franchises do we need?!), for more than a decade. Maybe I was in a great mood when I first watched it. Maybe I’m insane… Probably the latter.
I’ve found that people either absolutely love the original or despise it to its very core and for me, it’s a heartwarming piece of work that makes me laugh & cry at some points.
You know how some have “guilty pleasure movies” or “movies you love that you’re ashamed of loving it”? I have a pure, unadulterated love for the original and I HAVE NO SHAME ABOUT IT, MY FRIENDS. 10

Thanks for reading! Hopefully some of your favourites are coming out soon and I look forward to what April has in store following my 7th rewatch of Greek Wedding 2.

… Oh before I forget 🙂

    • Ah man. Can you imagine all this waiting and then it turns out to actually suck?? I’m sure WB did whatever was humanly possible to ensure it to be good so we’ll see!

      • From what I saw on the final trailer, I’m in love with Batman already aha Looks like they improved the one thing I didn’t like about The Dark Knight trilogy which was the fight scenes.
